In his first speech before the Congress, U.S. President Donald Trump outlined an ambitious agenda with a flair of optimism. From immigration to health care reform, here are the salient points of his speech

Appeals to unity, to pursue a common purpose, to "transform hope into action", reviving the American spirit. This is how President Donald Trump, in his first speech before the Congress, unsheathed a new tone, outlining an ambitious agenda with a flair of optimism, far from his somber inauguration speech. "The time for trivial fights is behind us. The time for small thinking is over. From now on, America will be empowered by our aspirations, not burdened by our fears. I am here tonight to deliver a message of unity and strength, and it is a message deeply delivered from my heart", said the President, starting by condemning the threats and acts of vandalism against Jewish centers. He then promised a "historic" tax reform, requested investments for $1,000 billion for infrastructure and guaranteed the construction "of a great big wall" at the border with Mexico. He assured that "the army shall have all the means for preventing new wars" and that new international alliances will be built, subject to NATO’s "strong" support.

America is ready to lead the world

"What we are witnessing today is the renewal of the American spirit. Our allies will find that America is once again ready to lead. All the nations of the world - friend or foe - will find that America is strong, America is proud, and America is free, declared Trump, announcing the start of "a new chapter of American greatness".

Strong measures against radical Islam

"We cannot allow a beachhead of terrorism to form inside America - we cannot allow our nation to become a sanctuary for extremists”, warned Trump, announcing "strong measures" to protect the country "from radical Islamic terrorism". Citing the attacks in Belgium and France, he called the indiscriminate entry of those from countries where adequate checks are not carried out "not compassionate but reckless". "We will work with our allies, including our friends and allies in the Muslim world, to extinguish this vile enemy from our planet".

Immigration reform based on merit

"I believe that real and positive immigration reform is possible, as long as we focus on the following goals: to improve jobs and wages for Americans, to strengthen our nation’s security, and to restore respect for our laws", said Trump, proposing a reform based on merit. "Switching away from this current system of lower-skilled immigration, and instead adopting a merit-based system, will have many benefits: it will save countless dollars, raise workers' wages, and help struggling families - including immigrant families - enter the middle class", said the President, citing Canada and Australia as role models. Trump’s goal, according to the rumors leaked a few hours before the speech, is that of a "compromising" immigration reform law, aimed at ensuring a legal status to illegal immigrants who have not committed crimes.

Remove and replace Obamacare

"So I am calling on all Democrats and Republicans in the Congress to work with us to save Americans from this imploding Obamacare disaster", said Trump, asking the Congress to "remove and replace" the health care reform established by former President Barack Obama.

78 percent of viewers reacted well to the speech

According to a CNN/ORC poll, 78 percent of viewers reacted positively to the President’s speech. Seven out of ten viewers also said they were more optimistic about the country’s future after listening to Trump.
