Google, DeepMind: Artificial intelligence to save energy

Google is using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve energy efficiency. The Mountain View tech giant has begun using AI technology developed by DeepMind to cut energy costs in its data centers. In particular, Google’s parent company Alphabet has recently installed in its data centers a system to improve the management of servers and other equipment. "It controls about 120 variables in the data centers. The fans and the cooling systems and so on," explained Demis Hassadis. DeepMind co-founder, speaking to Bloomberg. "It is a huge saving in terms of cost but, also, great for the environment," Hassabis added.
Within the data centers, energy efficiency is calculated with a standard called PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness), which measures the relationship between the energy used by the main equipment and the energy absorbed by the auxiliary equipment. Google estimates that, according to the PUE, with DeepMind’s help energy efficiency has increased by 15%.
