In an election marked by very low voter turnout – with just over 45% of eligible voters participating – Albania’s election was a victory for outgoing prime minister Edi Rama’s Socialist Party of Albania (PS). According to exit polls by local Ora News, the center-left party took 45-49%, while their main contender, the center-right Democratic Party (PD), led by Lulzim Basha, an ardent admirer of US president Donald Trump, came away with a meager 30-34%. However, if the ballot count confirms these numbers, neither party will have the minimum 70 of 140 seats in Parliament needed for a majority. Socialist Movement for Integration (LSI), part of Rama’s current governing coalition, won 11-15% of the vote.
